Genesis 1:1-31

For the glory and honor and power for ever and ever be to our God and His son, Jesus Christ. By God’s blessing upon my life as being one who can hold the word of God in my own hands and study them have come to a place where I will be reading through the bible and writing my own interpretations and commentaries of the book that bears the message of the good news.

The first chapter of the bible is an account of God’s power and authority in creating the heavens and earth and all things in it. God’s character is revealed by the words that he speaks and the way he creates. There is logic, there is drama, there is power being displayed as God speaks and reality reacts with creation. There is an awe that strikes the reader when they are given an account of God’s first great act. Animals are blessed to multiply and be fruitful, but human beings are made in the image of God and are given authority over the animals. From the very first chapter, there is authority being delegated to the Sun and the Moon to rule over the day and night and Human beings to dominate the creation.

The Account of Creation

This is an account of the creation of the world and of the heavens. The world is earth and the heavens are the skies. There are mistaken translations where they think heavens are the same as the “heaven” when in actuality it is not. There is somewhat of an interesting beginning here, because God was there. How did God get to the beginning before anyone else? God then is an eternal being. God is not bound by time, but is above time; therefore He’s able to witness the beginning of it for He created it.

After the earth was formed in verse one we have a description here of how the earth was without form and void. The earth was so new that there were no footprints, mountains, creeks, rivers, jungles, deserts, or anything else other than a flat land. It was also very dark at this time, because the sun and the moon have not been created yet. It was pitch black, darkness beyond any darkness known, because there was no light. The spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. God was somehow present on this earth that he just created. God was now not just a creator looking at His creation from far off, but He was experiencing His own creation; for God to be hovering over the face of the waters means God just entered into the reality of His own creation.

God then speaks “Let there be light.” This is the first time that God ever speaks in the bible. It is the first time that God says something. It reveals something of His character. The authority of His words is great, because our reality must obey it. There is a simple relationship shown here as God speaks creation obeys. God had just created the Sun.

God is enjoying his creation. He saw that it was good. God saw that the Sun was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. Obviously the dark and the light cannot be together, they must be separated. What makes me curious is why God didn’t call the darkness good, it was after He created light that he saw that it was good.

God names the light and the darkness as day and night. They are no longer a resemblance of light and the lack there of, but they are given characteristics and names of their own. God sees the very first morning sunrise and evening sunset.

The next day God says that he wants to separate the waters from the waters. This is the relationship between rain and the sea. The waters are the water in the sky that drop from the clouds and the other water is the water of the sea. The expanse is the sky. There is a mention of God calling the expanse heaven, but is it important to mention that this is not heaven as in God’s Kingdom, but it is heaven as the expanse of the sky.

God does what he said he would do.

This mention of heaven was explained in verse 6.

God then creates the land by gathering it the water into one place. Reality responded again and it was so. Here we see again God speaking into existence and reality responding to it.

God called the dry land Earth and the waters he called the Seas. Again, God sees that His creation is good. He is pleased with his own work. This really hits home for me, because many times I set things up and put them into place, but I am unable to enjoy my own work. Part of the pain and sweat is to enjoy the final goodness.

God does something amazing in this verse. He is able to create vegetables, plants with seeds (they reproduce themselves), and fruits trees that bear fruits that have the seeds in them that they can reproduce. God already knew the concept of reproduction.  With the final word that was spoken in the previous verse God created all the different kinds, types, cousins, variant, and whatever other word that you can think of for the genetic differences of every fruit to be created at one moment in time. Not only were they created, but they functioned in a way that they would keep making copies of themselves. These copies were information deposited in the seeds to react to the land that God separated the day before in order to reproduce itself and continue existing upon the earth. God created the earth to last for a long time.

The earth in one day produced vegetables and fruits that were able to reproduce themselves according to their kinds. This means when we plant an apple tree and apple will appear. God did not produce vegetables and fruits that would bear a different kind when planting its seed. There was a continuation and flow of genetic heritage. God enjoys his creation once again.

This was the end of the third day.

God creates the stars for the night. These stars would be used for the purpose of knowing what season (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) the earth is in. It would then be used for making a calendar.

The purpose of the stars and moon is to give light upon the earth. Reality reacted to God’s words.

God gave authority to the Sun to rule the day and gave authority to the moon to rule the night and the stars. This bears the relationship between man and the Sun. The life giving source of light that gives the earth what it needs to be a habitat that is sustainable for life is the Sun. All things on earth that are alive are dependent on the Sun for light. If the Sun does not give light there is no life. We are dependent of the Sun to provide light for us to have life. The sun is the greater light and the moon is the lesser, but they both have been given authority to rule over the day and night.

God give them their position. God places them on an invisible line that keeps rotating and yet does not crash into each other. This is again the power of God at work. God programs the sun and the moon to move in a certain way.

God instates the ruling of the day and night by the sun and moon.

The 4th day has passed.

On the 5th day, God creates all sea creatures and all the species of birds. God created birds which feed on seeds. We see here God’s logic working that He needs to make some fruits and plants before he creates the birds. These birds also eat fish. So on this day we makes these creatures.

We get a description of what kinds of sea creatures God has created. This verse says that God created water creatures of great size. This is referring to whales, sharks, giant squid and other large sea creatures. They also are found near each other and they are social animals. This is amazing that God has created something that not only reproduces, but is social in nature and lives among each other.

God gives them a word of blessing to reproduce and be great in number. This is the first blessing that God has given to any of his creatures. It is to reproduce and multiply on the earth.

This day has passed.

God commands the earth to bring forth creatures and animals to roam itself. This is interesting, because God commands his creation to create something. Cows, oxen, lions, lizards, snakes, bugs and so on were created on the fifth day.

God created each animal according to itself that it may reproduce itself. God saw the animals and enjoyed their sight. He saw that it was good.

Now God is creating man. For the first time God creates something in his own image and likeness. Make note of the plural “our” when God says image this is the first hint at the trinity as God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our likeness instead of my likeness shows that there is more than one being, but one God. God then give authority to the human being to have dominion over all of the creatures that God had created before him.

-28 God blesses human beings and tells them to be fruitful and multiply and to fill the earth. The difference between God’s blessing toward the animals and the human beings are that the human beings are given the blessing of having dominion over all the other creatures.

God gives human beings every seed bearing plant and fruit as food for consumption.

God gave the plants and fruits also to every single animal that they may eat them for food. The original design of human beings and animals was be vegetarians. They were made to eat vegetables and fruits. Even the animals were vegetarians in the first week of earth’s existence.

Not only does God enjoy his creation immediately after creating them, but He steps back and sees the whole picture and he is pleased once again. The harmony that He has created is from the infinite wisdom that is God.
